| GIN Pole Operations Guide and Rules A gin pole in sailing is a temporary, upright lever (often a pole or spar) used as a crane system to raise or lower a boat's mast safely. It uses a block and tackle to provide mechanical advantage, allowing one or two people to control the immense leverage required for stepping masts. - When using the GIN pole (on the top of the crane boom), always make sure that it is clear of boats and masts before operating.
- The control box (pendant) should be in the mailbox on the north side of the crane post.
- Do NOT pull on the cords connected to the control box (pendant). Use the rope at the end of the boom to maneuver the GIN pole.
- Do NOT drop the control box on the ground or on a boat – do not drop it! Keep it in your hand.
- When raising and lowering the lifting cable on the GIN pole, always apply a slight DOWNWARD pressure on the cable until connected to the mast.
DO NOT RAISE AND LOWER WIRE ROPE OF GIN POLE WITHOUT APPLYING DOWNWARD PRESSURE. - Keep an eye on the main spool on the motor of the GIN pole. If it appears that the wire on the spool is loose, stop and try to evaluate if there is an issue.
- Position the lift point (Mast) over the blue mark on the cement.
- Block/cock the wheels of your trailer. Use board by hoist.
- When you are finished, please return the electric control box to the mailbox on the north side of the crane pole. Fasten rope from crane boom to the harbor cleat.

Launching
ALWAYS HAVE A LOOKOUT, THIS IS A TWO-PERSON JOB. ASK FOR HELP!
- When using the hoist to place your boat in the water, make sure it is clear of boats and other equipment before operating.
- Align the board to the end of blue mark nearest the water. This will serve as your block for the wheels. (Position may vary slightly depending on boat and trailer size.)
- Back your boat up to the board aligning the keel so that it centers over the blue mark.
- Before freeing the boom, locate the controller. It is a good practice to have 1 or 2 extra people to help you with this. For example, one person holds the controller, and another the block & tackle.
NEVER YANK OR PULL ON THE CONTROLLER, OR USE IT TO MOVE THE BOOM!
DO NOT YANK, TUG, OR TRY TO FORCE THE CHAIN TO MOVE ALONG THE TRACK. THIS WILL UNPLUG THE MOTOR AT THE BOOM, AND CAUSE THE CORDS TO TANGLE AND JAM.
- Detach the boom line (cleat) and hook (hook minder bungee) from the dock, making sure the hook is not swinging loose where it could damage the boat or others.
- Use the line to move the boom into place. The person on the controller should be monitoring the height of the hook, moving it up and down as needed to raise it over the boat above the anchor point of the lifting harness in the boat.
- Using the controller, lower the hook until it can be attached to the harness by someone on the boat. The boom line can swing free at this point.
MAKE SURE THE LIFTING POINT (HARNESS) IS SECURE BEFORE LIFTING THE BOAT!
- Once the hook is attached, the person on the boat comes down.
- Position someone on the bow line, and begin raising the boat (only as high as needed to clear the trailer), as the bow person guides the boat around so that it faces to the south. A third person can be helpful in pushing the boat from the side to help position it over the water.
- When the boat is in position, lower it into the water.
Pay careful attention to the shrouds to make sure there is no danger of the boom getting caught in them and potentially bending or breaking the spreaders.
Make sure you know the best way to lower YOUR boat, as this may vary by type.
- Tie up your boat. If you are not handing the boom line and controller to another person, carefully detach the hook and secure it to the hook minder bungie. Using the controller, remove some of the slack (don't over-tension or bungee will eventually break) so the boom can't swing and secure the boom to a cleat. Place the controller cord in the hook so that it is not swinging free.

- Position someone on the bow line, and begin raising the boat (only as high as needed to clear the trailer), as the bow person guides the boat around so that it faces west. A third person can be helpful in guiding the boat's keel so that it aligns over the keel pad or roller on the trailer.
MAKE SURE THE LIFTING POINT (HARNESS) IS SECURE BEFORE LIFTING THE BOAT!
- When the boat is in position, lower it until the boat is being fully supported by the trailer.
- Unhook the harness, and guide it over the side of the boat while it is lowered, until the person on the ground can grab it.
- Swing the boom back towards the water.
Pay careful attention to the backstays to make sure it does not get caught in them.
